Single Review: DOOMBIA Ask the Eternal Question on “¿Quién Soy Yo?”

Somewhere between a basement punk show, a backyard cumbia dance party, and a desert vision quest, DOOMBIA are building something that shouldn't work on paper but somehow feels inevitable once you hear it.

The Portland-based quartet's latest single, “¿Quién Soy Yo?” ("Who Am I?"), arrives as the third offering from their forthcoming album El Diablo Que Conoces, and serves as perhaps the clearest expression yet of the band's unusual mission: finding common ground between doom metal's crushing weight and cumbia's communal pulse.

For decades, heavy music has often been boxed into rigid categories. With the rise of the Internet and Soundcloud culture, Metal elitism or really genre boundaries in general, are starting to thin and merge at a peculiar pace. DOOMBIA ignores these imaginary borders and lets flocks of freaks off their leashes.

On “¿Quién Soy Yo?”, heady guitar riffs descend like thunderclouds while percussion and cumbia rhythms keep the listeners grounded and grooving beneath them. The result’s a cultural conversation that welcomes tapping into a flow state. One tradition doesn't overpower the other. Instead, both are allowed to exist in the same space, creating something heavier, stranger, and more alive.

The song's title poses one of humanity's oldest questions: Who am I?

It's a question that echoes through philosophy classrooms, religious texts, late-night conversations, and lonely post-show drives home. DOOMBIA approach this notion through sheer motion.

The track moves between English and Spanish, between doubt and conviction, between introspection and celebration. Even as the lyrics wrestle with identity, faith, and accountability, the infectious groove keeps moving forward.

This tension makes the song pop off similarly to when bands like Electric Wizard or SLEEP tap into their iconic stoner rock pockets of bliss. It invites participation, bass faces guaranteed.

In many ways, DOOMBIA's existence feels reflective of a larger shift happening throughout underground music.

Younger artists are increasingly rejecting the idea that culture must fit into refined categories. Instead, they’re creating hybrid spaces where heritage, experimentation, and community can coexist without explanation.

As a BIPOC-led and gender-queer band, DOOMBIA embodies the spirit of change naturally. Their music feels like the outcome of lived experience. The sound emerges from overlapping identities, musical histories, and communities rather than from a desire to chase novelty.

Since forming in 2023, the group has quickly become one of Portland's most distinctive underground acts.

Their blend of doom metal, psychedelic rock, and Latin cumbia has earned them artist grants, West Coast tours, and recognition from local outlets, but what stands out most is their commitment to making heavy music feel welcoming rather than exclusionary.

Recorded with producer Justin Phelps and mastered by Alan Douches, El Diablo Que Conoces promises to expand that vision even further. If “¿Quién Soy Yo?” is any indication, the upcoming album won't simply blend styles. It'll continue asking larger questions about identity, belonging, and what happens when seemingly distant worlds collide.

At a time when algorithms encourage audiences to stay within familiar lanes, DOOMBIA offers something far more interesting: an invitation to cross borders.

The song asks, “Who am I?” The answer may be different for every listener while the dance floor stays open, welcoming everyone who taps in.
